The Syrian presidency said, on Thursday, that President Bashar al-Assad will go to the Saudi city of Jeddah to participate in the Arab summit that will be held tomorrow, Friday, in a step that represents the completion of Syria’s return to the Arab system.
In early May, the foreign ministers of the Arab countries adopted a decision to return Syria to occupy its seat in the League of Arab States, following an absence of 12 years. After that, the Secretary-General of the League, Ahmed Aboul Gheit, stated that Assad might participate in the summit, if he so desired.
Also in early May, the Saudi monarch, King Salman bin Abdulaziz, handed an invitation to Assad to participate in the summit.
The invitation was delivered by the Saudi ambassador to Jordan, Nayef bin Bandar Al-Sudairy, during his meeting with Al-Assad in Damascus.
The Arab League suspended Syria’s membership in 2011 as the civil war broke out.
In recent years, some Arab countries have returned to dealing with Syria through high-level visits and meetings.
The Arab League says that there is a general Arab trend recently that believes that the international community, following a long period of monopolizing the Syrian file, is unable to solve this file, even if there is something like field stability inside Syria.
It believes that there are repercussions involving the situation in Syria, such as drug smuggling, the fight once morest terrorism, the political process, and the burdens of Syrian refugees in neighboring countries, which requires more effective Arab interest in Syria.
