Judicial sources said that the Syrian refugee who was stabbed last week in a park on the banks of Lake Annecy in the French Alps, six people, including four children, was transferred from a prison to a mental institution near the city of Lyon.
The sources told Agence France-Presse that the accused, Abd al-Masih Hanoun, was transferred to the well-equipped Vinatier medical unit in Bronne, near Lyon (central east).
The authorities had placed Abdel-Masih Hanoun in pre-trial detention in Ayton Prison, in the Savoie region, where he was held in a cell equipped to prevent suicides.
The accused was arrested following sowing terror Thursday morning in a park located on the shores of Lake Annecy, where he stabbed six people, two adults and four young children.
Following his arrest, he was charged with “attempted murder” and placed in pre-trial detention, without the investigation so far making it possible to understand the motives for his behavior.
After he fled his country, which was plunged into war, Abdel Masih obtained a permanent residence permit in Sweden at the end of 2013, where he was granted asylum.
Lynne Bonnet-Mathes, the Annecy prosecutor, confirmed that at the time of the attack the accused was “neither under the influence of drugs nor under the influence of alcohol”.
“At the moment, no terrorist motive has emerged,” she added.
When he carried out his attack, eyewitnesses heard him mentioning his wife and daughter and speaking in the name of Jesus Christ.
On Saturday, the Public Prosecutor confirmed that the lives of the six wounded were no longer in danger.
