Dubai, United Arab Emirates (CNN) – Syrian President Bashar al-Assad will arrive in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia, Thursday, for the first time in more than 12 years, to participate in the Arab summit, according to the Syrian presidency.

The presidency said on its Twitter page: “President Bashar al-Assad is heading today to the city of Jeddah in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia to participate in the work of the thirty-second session of the Arab League Council meeting at the summit level, which will be held tomorrow, Friday.”

The Saudi monarch, King Salman bin Abdulaziz, had sent an official invitation to Assad, which was delivered by the Saudi ambassador to Jordan, to participate in the Arab summit, on May 10.

Most of the member states of the Arab League agreed to stop freezing Syria’s seat in the league, provided that it participates in the upcoming summit in Jeddah on May 19.

The Syrian Foreign Minister, Faisal Al-Miqdad, participated in the preparatory meeting of the foreign ministers of the member states of the Arab League, which was held in Jeddah on Wednesday.
