DAMASCUS, May 19 (Xinhua) — Syrian President Bashar al-Assad arrived in the Saudi city of Jeddah on Thursday on the eve of the 32nd Arab League summit.
He was greeted upon his arrival by Saudi Prince Badr bin Sultan bin Abdulaziz, also deputy emir of the Makkah region on which Jeddah depends, Arab League Secretary General Ahmed Aboul-Gheit, and several other local dignitaries, according to the press service of the Syrian presidency.
This visit, the first since the start of the Syrian conflict in 2011, comes as Damascus and Riyadh have renewed their diplomatic ties, suspended since November 2011.
On May 7, the 22 member countries of the Arab League decided to reintegrate Syria into their ranks. END
