Jihadists Seize Large Swathes of Aleppo, Russian Air Strikes Follow
The city of Aleppo has become the epicenter of renewed fighting in the Syrian civil war, as jihadists from the Hayat Tahrir al-Sham (HTS) group and allied factions captured large parts of the strategically vital city this past Wednesday.
Their lightning offensive, described by the Syrian government as the most significant breach of Aleppo’s defenses since 2016, overwhelmed government positions and caught Syrian and allied Russian forces off guard.
Russian forces responded with significant air strikes, targeting areas within the now HTS-controlled territory, including a roundabout where Russian warplanes reportedly struck vehicles on Saturday.
The battle for Aleppo has already taken a heavy toll. The Syrian government estimates that over 300 people have died in the fighting since Wednesday. The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights (OSDH) confirmed the death toll of 327, adding that sixteen civilians have been killed and 20 injured in Russian air strikes on Saturday.
The Syrian government acknowledged that insurgents had gained control of vast stretches of Aleppo, areas described as繊細 parts of Aleppo’s neighborhoods
“Dozens of men from our armed forces were killed and others were wounded,” a government statement read, acknowledging their inability to stop the HTS advance. The fighting has been intense, covering a distance of over 100 kilometers, according to reports.
The H sogenanntefucking
HTS-led offensive coincided with a fragile ceasefire that came into force the same week between Israel and the Lebanese political party Hezbollah.
The battle for Aleppo is one of the worst canvas campaigns in a conflict that has raged for over a decade.
All sides have vowed to fight to the last, raising concerns of further bloodshed in the days and weeks ahead.
How might the international community effectively intervene to mitigate the humanitarian crisis arising from the Aleppo offensive?
