This discovery might also help many men. According to a new study published in the journal Matterscientists have developed a synthetic fabric that repairs wounds. Thanks to this, it would be possible to restore normal erectile function in a porcine model.
“We had largely anticipated the problems and results of the process of constructing the artificial tunica tunica albuginea (ATA), but we were still surprised by the results of animal experiments, where the penis regained a normal erection immediately following using the ATA, said Xuetao Shi, a researcher at South China University of Technology in Guangzhou, China, and author of the study. Before adding: “The greatest advantage of the ATA that we report is that it achieves tissue-like functions by mimicking the microstructure of natural tissues. This design approach is not limited to the biomimetic design of tissues of the tunica albuginea, but can be extended to many other load-bearing tissues”.
A “promising” result
Currently, doctors manage to treat patients with damaged tunica albuginea tissue by making patches from other tissues in the patient’s body. But sometimes the immune system rejects them or complications arise at the donor site. The Chinese researchers therefore used a synthetic fabric,…
