The 25-year-old was only beaten by local hero Yukiko Inui (276.5717) on Saturday with 264.4200 points and thus celebrated a medal for the first time at a World Championships. The Spaniard Iris Tio Casas secured bronze (254.2100).

The oldest of the three Alexandri sisters had won their first medals at a major event last year at the European Championships in Rome with double bronze. Last year, the local Olympic hopeful had twice finished fifth at the World Championships in Budapest, now she celebrated the biggest success of her career in Japan.

In the preliminary on Friday, Alexandri, who was born in Greece, took third place (232.8367), but also received a point penalty. Alexandri’s preparation for the World Championships in Fukuoka was not optimal due to a disc problem, and she missed two weeks of training. The next chance for a medal for Alexandri is in the free program on Wednesday, before that the preliminaries are on the program on Monday.

Her triplet sisters Anna-Maria and Eirini-Marina Alexandri are reaching for a medal in the technical freestyle of the duet competition on Sunday (12.30 p.m.). In the prelim on Friday, the red-white-red duo took second place, last year there were two bronze medals at the World Championships in Budapest.
