Tummy aches or difficulty going to the bathroom frequently are some of the telltale signs of irritable bowel syndrome. The condition is a disorder of the digestive tract that causes abdominal pain and constipation or diarrhea, according to the Brazilian Federation of Gastroenterology.
This condition, which affects regarding 10% to 20% of the Brazilian population, is more common in women and can be aggravated in times of stress or by eating certain foods.
Foods such as milk and derivatives and fats can cause certain symptoms and a decline in quality of life, as explained by physician Eric Pereira, a gastroenterologist at Hospital e Clínica São Gonçalo (HCSG). The most common symptoms are:
- Pain and change in bowel habits (diarrhea and/or constipation);
- Abdominal distension;
- Excess gases;
- Sensation that bowel emptying is incomplete.
