The grandeur of France, which bet on the “swimming” nature of the Seine for long-distance swimming and triathlon competitions without a real alternative, has crashed into reality. Despite spending 1.4 billion, the strong current of the Paris river has affected the competitions, but the strongest controversy is the one related to the quality of the water. For the organizers of the Olympics, the levels of escherichia coli and other bacteria were below the warning level, and therefore the competition was held. The athletes’ illnesses were not enough to change the French mind. The latest complaint is sensational and comes from swimmer Leonie Beck who two days ago finished ninth in the 10 km long distance at the Paris 2024 Games. “Yesterday I vomited 9 times and had diarrhea. The quality of the water in the Seine is approved,” wrote the German athlete on Instagram, who is not just anyone: three-time world champion, she was among the big favorites of the event but has never managed to keep up with the pace of the best.
The first to suspect something was not crystal clear in the analyses of the river water was the Italian Gregorio Paltrinieri: “If the values are good, it is not crazy to swim in the Seine. Of course, the river was always unusable except on the days of the races when it became accessible again, a bit strange”, said the swimmer, ninth in the 10 kilometre open water swimming event at the Paris Olympics held in the Seine.
