Sydney: New information that the Australian teenager who was reported to have been killed in the Islamic State attack a year ago is alive in a Syrian prison. Yusuf Sahab, who was believed to have been killed at the age of 17, appeared ‘alive’ in the video. The teenager appeared healthy in the video. ‘The Guardian’ reported that Yusuf’s family members in Australia were overjoyed at the news that he was alive.

Yusuf Sahab was just 11 years old when his family was taken to Syria a decade ago. Yusuf’s older brothers were IS fighters and recruiters. The family went to the ISIS controlled area in Syria. But after the fall of Islamic State in 2019, 14-year-old Yusuf was separated from his mother by Kurdish forces and sent to prison with the militants.

Yusuf had been in prison since the age of 14, even though he had no crime against him. It was reported at the time that Yusuf was killed in an airstrike on the prison in January last year by IS fighters to free their fighters.

But in the video released now, 19-year-old Yusuf can be seen speaking. The video is believed to have been filmed inside a prison in the northeastern Syrian city of Hasaqah.

In the video, Yusuf, wearing a T-shirt, says his name and his parents’ names. The date is said to be 15 September 2022. This means that although the video is almost a year old, it has been confirmed that Yusuf survived the IS attack on the prison.

The video was handed over to Australian authorities and shown to Yusuf’s family members in Australia. Youssef was also identified by the Syrian Democratic Forces, which is fighting ISIS. International NGOs are trying to confirm this.

The family said they had received information from several sources that Yusuf was alive. Yusuf was a very young child when he went to Syria. The suffering he went through since then is unimaginable. The family expressed concern that the teenager is still living in isolation in north-east Syria, away from his family.

Yusuf’s mother, sister, and sister’s young children are now in a detention camp in northeastern Syria. Yusuf’s brothers Khalid and IS recruiter Muhammad were killed in the airstrike.

At the time, reports emerged that at least 40 Australian children, like Yousef, were living in hell in camps in northeastern Syria. Volunteers say the only way to save these children is to bring them and their mothers to Australia.

The Australian federal government has launched two missions to repatriate Australians stuck in Syria. In 2019, eight orphaned children, including a pregnant teenager, were returned to New South Wales from the camps. Four women and 13 children were brought back last October.

At the same time, there is concern that the return of those who left the country for terrorist activities could pose a security threat.
