The Swiss Olympic plans for the Winter Games from 2030 are becoming more concrete: hosting them is feasible for Swiss Olympic and the Olympic winter sports associations, as a new study shows. The aim is to have decentralized and largely privately financed games that are played on existing facilities in all language regions.

At the end of November, the delegates from the sports associations at the meeting of the Swiss Sports Parliament will definitely decide whether the Olympic plans should go ahead. In addition to Switzerland, France and Sweden have already signaled interest for 2030.

In 1928 St. Moritz welcomed 25 countries to the Engadine. However, there was almost no snow and the organizers had to contend with unusually high temperatures.

«St. “Moritz has received so many visitors that his streets can hardly accommodate the Olympic hustle and bustle,” was the television commentary in 1948 on the second Winter Olympics in the Swiss mountains. It ended a twelve-year break without the Winter Olympics due to the Second World War.

Since then, dozens of Swiss candidacies have failed – some at an early stage. Squaw Valley (USA) beat St. Moritz for the 1960 event. Innsbruck was once once more the host location for the 1976 Games, for which Sion had also applied.

The Winter Olympics are scheduled to be held in Italy (Milan/Cortina) in 2026.

Other Valais applications for the 2002 and 2006 events also lost out in the decisions of the International Olympic Committee (IOC). Candidacies planned later – including in Bern and Graubünden – failed because the voters said no.

The Winter Olympics had a difficult time in Switzerland. Although in recent years both the Federal Council and many cantonal governments have supported the event, politicians and society have often disagreed regarding a candidacy.

If the Winter Olympics were to find their way back to Switzerland from 2030, then St. Moritz would no longer be the only place to celebrate. As of now, over ten different venues are being planned.

Will the big Winter Olympics celebrations take place here in 2030?
