The subject of an episode of Black Mirror might soon become a reality in Switzerland. The SRF is testing the contribution of generative AI in the production of a fiction series.
SRF is developing a series with the help of artificial intelligence. The daily Daily Scoreboard (paywall) indeed indicates that German-speaking television is testing ChatGPT-type tools with a team of authors. It’s regarding creating the scenario of a fiction series in interaction with AI. The subject has not yet been defined and will also be defined via the dialogues with the chatbot.
“The fiction department wants to test with this project where AI can be used in a responsible and targeted way. To do this, the AI will be tested throughout the process, from the search for ideas and production to technical post-production”, reports the German-speaking daily. Head of fiction at SRF, Baptiste Planche adds that the result will have to respect narrative conventions and that the objective is not necessarily to make AI the theme of the series, like the first episode of the last season of Black Mirror, which took a critical look at this practice.
On Linkedinthe head of the cultural department of the SRF, Susanne Wille, explains that with this project, the channel is testing practical applications of AI, to seize the opportunities, but also the risks and the limits.
According to the Tages Anzeiger, the project is causing debate in the Swiss audiovisual sector. Particularly with regard to issues related to copyright and transparency regarding the use of such tools in the production process. But also concerning the risks on employment (origin of the current strike of screenwriters and actors in Hollywood).
With this project, the SRF would not intend to explore ways to save money. However, as observed le site Inside-ITif the initiative for a fee of 200 francs is accepted, the SSR will necessarily have to find where to reduce the costs…
