“Switzerland’s Overshoot Day and Greenpeace’s Urgent Message: Living Beyond Our Means”

Switzerland has been living on credit since May 13th. Earth Overshoot Day marks the date when humanity’s demand for ecological resources and services in one year exceeds what the earth can regenerate in the same period.

For this reason, activists from the environmental protection organization Greenpeace climbed onto a crane on the Bundesplatz in Bern on Saturday morning. According to a 20 Minutes reporter at the scene, there are six people on the crane. “How did they get up there?” asks a stallholder at the weekly market in Bern, which is currently being held on Bundesplatz.

In the course of the action, the activists rolled out a banner and lowered themselves from the construction crane. The onlookers applaud, as can be seen in the video. The police are on site and have set up a restricted area.

A campaigner from Greenpeace said to 20 minutes: “The idea for the campaign came from individual activists. I think it’s great that attention is drawn to the day.”

“Our livelihoods are not guaranteed. Switzerland is bankrupt. On Swiss Overshoot Day, Switzerland used up all its resources for the rest of the year,” Greenpeace said. You’ve been living on credit since May 13th. When ecosystems collapse, people perish too, it goes on to say. Switzerland is breaking “the planetary boundaries”. These would describe the framework in which we humans can live safely on earth. The planetary boundaries encompass nine ecological dimensions, including climate change, biodiversity loss and water use, writes Greenpeace.
