While inflation is falling in Switzerland, prices in food stores in particular remain very high. According to fund manager Clément Maclou, interviewed in Forum, even if it slows down, inflation is still positive and leads to a phase of rising prices.

As the end-of-year holidays approach, the Swiss devote themselves to Christmas gifts and various expenses intended for the festivities. This year, they are expected to pay 411 francs on average, compared to 500 francs last year, due to the rising costs of health, energy and food products.

However, inflation is now falling in Switzerland. Last month, it fell to 1.4% below the desirable threshold of 2%.

Economists surveyed by the Institute for Economic Research (KOF) at the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology Zurich (ETH Zurich) also revised their inflation forecast downwards to 1.6% for next year, an adjustment which comes after those announced in particular by the Swiss National Bank (SNB) and the State Secretariat for the Economy (Seco) last week.

Since the summer, consumer prices have marked a sharp decline in Switzerland, going from 1.7% in June year-on-year to 1.4% at the last reading in November. Inflation is thus part of the objective of 0% to 2% sought by the Swiss National Bank and which it equates with price stability.

However, food prices do not seem to follow this trend and remain high. According to Clément Maclou, manager of a fund dedicated to nutrition at the European financial group Oddo BHF, this situation is normal.

“Inflation is indeed slowing down but we have not completely tamed it. We still have positive inflation: the rise in prices is slowing down, but we are still in a phase of rising prices and not in a phase of falling prices. price. This explains why prices at the checkout continue to increase,” he explained on Monday in the RTS Forum show.

The manager nevertheless considers it likely that food prices will eventually fall. “Over the last twenty years, we have experienced seven years of falling prices, so it is possible,” indicated Clément Maclou, stressing that certain categories of products are already in decline, such as fruits, vegetables or dairy products. .
