2023-05-06 08:01:41

The increase in consumer prices decelerated in April in Switzerland in annual comparison, thanks in particular to the decline in the prices of petroleum products. The prices of food and non-alcoholic beverages, on the other hand, have increased.

During the month under review, inflation stood at 2.6% following 2.9% in March, the Federal Statistical Office (FSO) announced on Friday.

The consumer price index (CPI) remained stable in April compared to the previous month at 106 points, said a press release. Compared to March 2023, prices for air transport, travel packages and those for clothing increased in April while hotels, some fruit vegetables and heating oil decreased.

Economists polled by AWP expected inflation to fall within a range of between 2.6% and 2.8%. The monthly variation was expected between +0.1% and +0.3%.

Core inflation, not taking into account the trend in fresh produce and energy prices, stood at 2.2%.

Consumers thus had to pay more for food and non-alcoholic beverages (+5.4% over one year), housing and energy (+3.7%), leisure and culture (+4, 1%) as well as clothes and shoes (+3%). On the other hand, they benefited from the decline in petroleum products (-12.1%).

Among the items whose prices increased the most are the rental of motor vehicles (+33.6% over one year), pasta (+12.9%), electric bicycles (+15.2%) and air transport (+26.5%).
