Switzerland: Woman ends her life using ‘illegal’ assisted suicide capsule – Several arrests

Police in the district of Schaffhausen said they had arrested “several people” on suspicion of inciting and instigating suicide after he reportedly died using a pod made by Sarco on Monday.

While assisted dying is legally protected in some cases in Switzerland, it is tightly regulated and the Sarco pod has met with opposition.

The police recovered the device and the body at the scene.

The company behind the controversial pod says it can be operated solely by the person who wants to end their life, without medical supervision.

Police said it was used on Monday in a forest hut in the Merishausen district, a sparsely populated area of Switzerland on the German border.

Police said they were notified by a law firm of a suicide involving the device. The number of those arrested and their identities were not released. The deceased was also not named.

In July, an assisted dying group promoting the Sarco device said it expected it to be used for the first time this year.

Supporters say it provides an option that doesn’t depend on drugs or doctors and that it expands access to euthanasia because the portable device can be 3D printed and assembled at home.

However, there has also been opposition in Switzerland, despite the country having some of the most protective laws in the world regarding assisted dying.

Critics fear the device’s modern design glamorizes suicide, and the fact that it can operate without medical supervision is worrying.

Assisted dying is illegal in the UK and most other European countries, but thousands have traveled to Switzerland over the years to end their lives.
