Switzerland experienced the lowest temperatures of the winter so far during the night from Friday to Saturday. Near Buffalora, at the Ofen Pass (GR), the mercury dropped to -28 degrees. In Samedan (GR), it showed -26.3 degrees.

The cold was also bitter in the plains. In Ebnat-Kappel (SG), it was -15.8 degrees. Values were also low in Egolzwil (LU), with -15.3 degrees, and in Tänikon (TG), with -15 degrees.

The reason for these freezing temperatures is cold Arctic air coming directly from the North Pole, explains MeteoSwiss. Clear skies also contributed.

Minimum values were reached in the middle of the night. But as the second half of the night progressed, temperatures began to rise, with a bit of a breeze, notes the private meteorological service MeteoNews.
