Never has it been so hot on average during the month of May in Switzerland. Never, or almost. According to MeteoNews, the only month of May that exceeded that of 2022 in terms of temperatures was 154 years ago, that is to say in 1868. On average, it was 2.5 degrees warmer than once morest expected standards. The gap is even more marked in French-speaking Switzerland, such as in Pully (+3.7°), La Dôle (+3.8°) or the Col du Grand St-Bernard (+3.9°).

“May 2022 feels more like a summer month than a spring month and has therefore been significantly too mild over much of the territory. In addition, the weather has so far been clearly too dry, especially in the west and south, and clearly too sunny, especially in the west,” summarizes the MeteoSuisse blog.

Geneva: thirteen summer days instead of five

“Of course, May lasts another five days and the temperatures will be a little lower from this weekend. The average will move down a little, but the month of May 2022 will still remain at the top of the list of temperature records”, notes the meteorological service on its site Friday followingnoon.

MeteoNews also calculated the number of days when temperatures reached summer values (25 degrees and more). In Sion, there were 12, in Geneva 13 and in Lugano 15. The expected standard? Between 4 and 5 days for the Plateau. As for precipitation, it was not sufficient on part of the territory, in particular in the west of the country and in Valais. Finally, there were more than 30% more hours of sunshine than usual, in part of the country.
