Switzerland is preparing to close its airspace for flights to and from Russia. The Federal Office for Civil Aviation (Bazl) announced on Monday that the final decision was up to the Federal Council. In connection with the war in Ukraine, they are in close contact with other federal agencies and are exchanging views on current developments.
The airspace over the EU countries is now completely closed to Russian planes. In fact, due to Switzerland’s geographical location, this means that Swiss airspace is also closed. Theoretically, Russian planes might only fly within Switzerland. Russian machines that are currently in Switzerland can no longer fly back.
Private jets are also affected
The ban came into force on Monday night when it was published in the EU Official Journal. EU Commission President Ursula von der Leyen (63) stressed on Sunday that EU airspace would be closed to all Russian aircraft, including the private jets of oligarchs.
Individual countries – such as Germany, Poland, Italy, Belgium, Ireland – had previously closed their airspace to Russian aircraft or announced this. On the night of Sunday, Russia also closed its airspace to aircraft from a number of EU countries. (SDA/lha)
