A somewhat happy finalist in the 4 x 100 meter relay at the world junior championships in Cali, Switzerland was less fortunate in the final. Soraya Becerra, Emma Van Camp, Selina Furler and Anouck Ledermann have certainly crossed the finish line, in seventh position following the abandonment of Great Britain. The Swiss quartet was finally disqualified, a quarter of an hour following the race, probably for a faulty transmission of witnesses.
An average time
Switzerland had swallowed the lap in 45”72, quite far from its performance the day before – 44”94 – and, above all, from the national record – 44”61 – which it aspired to titillate. The four girls had however warned that they would take risks in the final since they had already achieved their goal by reaching this stage of the competition.
The junior world title went to Jamaica who won in 42”59, a time that is also a new junior world record. It was already her who had the reference time over the distance in 42”94 achieved in August 2021. Second, the United States ran in 43”28, a new national junior record. Colombia took the bronze medal in 44”59.
A track still wet
The race took place on a track that was still very wet, one hour behind the initial program due to the rain, which regularly disrupted these junior world championships in Colombia.
As a reminder, Switzerland had qualified for the final following a draw since it had shared the same time with the Czech Republic: 44”94. The two relays had then achieved the eighth best time in the semi-final. It was following an hour of waiting that the Swiss quartet was able to explode with joy.
