Swisscom: the TAF confirms a fine of 71.8 million francs

The Federal Administrative Court (TAF) has confirmed a fine of 71.8 million francs imposed in 2016 on Swisscom and its subsidiary Cinetrade for abuse of a dominant position in the field of television broadcasts of sporting events.

The blue giant and Blue entertainment – the heir to Cinetrade – ensure in a statement on Wednesday that they remain convinced of the legality of their actions at the time.

The incumbent telecommunications operator is currently evaluating the possibility of a new appeal before the Federal Court. The penalty imposed in 2016 was already a halving of an initial penalty of 143 million.

The confirmation by the TAF will immediately weigh on Swisscom’s performance in the second quarter of the current year. The 71.8 million will be directly subtracted from the operating surplus before interest charges, taxes, value adjustments and amortizations (Ebitda). However, the roadmap for the entire exercise remains unchanged.
