After the Bahrain racing team of Gino Mäder, who died in an accident, the Swiss team Tudor also dropped out of the Tour de Suisse. The team announced this on Saturday before the start of the penultimate stage of the Tour of Switzerland. The evening before, after discussions with the Mäders family, the teams and drivers, the organizers decided to continue the race despite the tragic events.

The non-attendance of Mäder’s team had already been determined on Friday. The Austrians Hermann Pernsteiner and Rainer Kepplinger, who are under contract with Bahrain, did not start in Switzerland. East Tyrolean Felix Gall from the AG2R team, who was second in the overall standings, had pleaded for a termination given the sad circumstances.

Mäder was fatally injured in a fall on a high-speed descent a few kilometers from the finish on Thursday. The 26-year-old died in hospital the next day. The stage planned for Friday was then cancelled, and instead a commemorative trip was held to commemorate Mäder.

The 183.5 kilometer long seventh stage on Saturday will be driven with a smoother finale, it leads from Tübach to Weinfelden. However, the time measurement for the overall ranking is already 18.8 kilometers before the finish and the last descent. The stage victory is again only on the home straight.

The Bahrain and Tudor teams will no longer compete. “Under these difficult circumstances, we have the feeling that it is the most humane way to respect the feelings of our drivers and to honor Gino,” explained the Tudor racing team of cycling legend Fabian Cancellara.
