Cantons all over the country are struggling with a shortage of teachers and unqualified teachers. Now the umbrella association of teachers is putting pressure on the cantons.
Schools all over Switzerland are saying that they are looking for trained teachers. There are currently over 300 jobs advertised for teachers in the canton of Bern. Two studies commissioned by the Aargau Education Department show the consequences of this shortage in schools.
They confirm that school principals and teachers are exposed to increased stress. For example, they are also busy looking for teachers or looking following untrained or only partially trained teaching staff.
Cantons should act
This endangers the quality of education in the medium to long term, writes the umbrella association of teachers in Switzerland. That’s why he’s working with the cantonal teachers’ associations on an action plan to put pressure on the cantons.
There are currently 2,500 people teaching at schools in Bern without adequate training.
For example in the canton of Bern. There, the Bern Education Professional Association launched a cantonal initiative on Wednesday that aims to anchor educational quality in the cantonal constitution. The association wants to ensure that there are enough qualified teachers in the school classes.
“There are currently 2,500 people teaching in Bern schools without adequate training,” says Stefan Wittwer, Managing Director of Education Bern. This endangers the quality of teaching in the long term.

Today the constitution only states that the canton of Bern and the municipalities run schools and that teaching is denominational and politically neutral. The initiative now requires that enough trained teachers be made available for teaching throughout the canton.
The canton of Bern is not alone in its demand. The cantons of Aargau and Schwyz have also submitted initiatives on the same topic. In Bern, the initiators now have six months to collect 15,000 valid signatures. In the canton of Aargau, 3,000 valid signatures are needed within a year.
