Anyone who thinks of the Habsburgs thinks of Vienna, the Hofburg or the Lippizaner, but hardly any castle in Aargau. The roots of the Austrian emperors lie there of all places. Why actually? And why did the dynasty give up its ancestral seat?
Die Habsburg is in the municipality of Habsburg in the canton of Aargau. It towers a good 500 meters above the surrounding landscape. The name says it all: In fact, the building is the ancestral seat of the Habsburgs, who steered the fortunes of Europe for centuries.
But why is the ancestral seat of this dynasty, which provided the emperors in Austria-Hungary, in Switzerland? The art historian Esther Duran-Gloor knows the answer, explains the historical context and also knows how the approximately 20 residents lived.
