(Keystone-ATS) Meeting at an annual meeting this weekend in Bern, the Swiss Socialist Youth reiterated its support for the 13th AVS pension, up for vote on March 3. Looking at the future of the retirement system, the JS proposes to strengthen the AVS by removing the two other pillars.

If, in the immediate future, the young socialists want to “relieve the 15% of retirees who currently live below the poverty line” by supporting the initiative for a 13th AVS pension, they plan to completely change the retirement system beyond the votes of March 3. They want to abolish professional and private pensions, retaining only one pillar, the AVS.

The assembly adopted a resolution to this effect, “in favor of popular pensions”, wrote the JS on Saturday in a press release. “The 1000 billion francs, currently in the coffers of the 2nd pillar, might make it possible to partly finance a minimum pension of 5000 francs per month for all,” explained Mélanie Rufi, vice-president of the JS, quoted in the party press release.

To complete the financing, the JS demands that the contribution rate be progressive and that capital income is also subject to contributions. A tax on large fortunes should supplement the financing of the single pillar.
