Are the Swiss circumventing sanctions once morest Russia? That’s what has examined Tuesday night the US Senate. Washington suspects Bern of lacking firmness vis-à-vis Russia, or even of letting Russian oligarchs launder money on Swiss territory.
Close ties between Switzerland and Russia, as well as a Swiss culture of secrecy, permissive laws, and the presence of Russian hydrocarbon traders would have aroused suspicion. Several examples show Swiss firms playing with sanctions, without necessarily circumventing them, which might have tickled Uncle Sam.
