Swiss Rowers Claim Gold Medal at World Championships in Belgrade – Andrin Gulich and Roman Röösli

The coxless pair with Andrin Gulich and Roman Röösli gave Switzerland its second gold medal at the World Championships in Belgrade.

In the 1000m, the middle of the race, the 24-year-old from Zurich and the 29-year-old from Lucerne were still 1”03 behind the Irish Nathan Timoney/Ross Corrigan. The two Swiss then took the lead to build a lead of 2”37 at the finish over the British Tom George/Oliver Wynne-Griffith.

Gulich and Röösli have only been rowing together since the start of the season. At the end of May, the duo celebrated the European title. The two German-speaking people also took control of the general classification of the World Cup. It therefore follows from a certain logic if they were crowned in Belgrade. For Röösli, this is already the 2nd medal at the Worlds following the silver collected in a double scull with Barnabé Delarze – retired from elite sport – in 2018.

Money for Ahumada/Schäuble

Ahumada/Schäuble also arrived in Belgrade as European champions and World Cup winners in the double sculls. The Vaudois (22 years old) and the Nidwalden (23 years old) took the lead in the first 3 intermediate times. But from the 1500m, it appeared that the Irish duo Paul O’Donovan/Fintan McCarthy was going to prove unbeatable once once more.

O’Donovan is crowned world champion for the 4th time in a row in this category, the 3rd time alongside McCarthy. The two rowers won gold at the Tokyo Olympics in 2021. Ahumada/Schäuble had to fend off the Italians Gabriel Soares/Stefano Oppo, who coveted their silver medal, until the last meters. The Swiss duo saved their 2nd place by 39 hundredths. On Friday, Andri Struzina was crowned world champion in the lightweight single scull.
