With the expertise of the University of Applied Sciences (FH) Upper Austria, Swiss Post is now testing “green packaging” together with five project partners.
Selected products from Dm, Intersport, Tchibo and Interspar are now shipped in packaging that can be reused up to 100 times. The packaging consists of renewable raw materials or recycled PET.
Return instructions are included in the package
“Together we are tackling a key problem in e-commerce, namely packaging waste,” says Peter Umundum, Board Member for Parcels and Logistics at Österreichische Post AG.
Instructions on how to return the packaging are also included in the packages. This can be returned via mailboxes, post offices or self-service zones of the post office. The packaging from dm, Thalia and Tchibo can also be returned to the company’s respective branch locations. Customers also have the opportunity to give their opinion on the new mailing bags and boxes.
“From a research perspective, we are very pleased regarding the commitment of companies to sustainable packaging solutions. With the data obtained in the pilot test, we can carry out an extensive life cycle analysis of the packaging and analyze its durability and practicality. We hope to achieve meaningful results with a high added value for online trading,” says Franz Staberhofer, head of the logistics center at the University of Applied Sciences in Upper Austria.
