Swiss Politicians Nuria Gorrite, Sylvie Bonvin-Sansonnens, Théo Huguenin-Elie Triumph Over Illness: Their Inspiring Stories

2024-01-18 21:28:33

Nuria Gorrite, Sylvie Bonvin-Sansonnens, Théo Huguenin-Elie: these politicians recently had to face illness, like many others in Switzerland. Back in their respective positions, they deliver their testimonies.

“It’s the feeling of turning the page on a difficult year,” says Nuria Gorrite, who this week found her colleagues and her files.

Serene and smiling, the Vaud state councilor speaks of a “victory over illness” at the start of the year.

She had to take time off from her duties to undergo surgery for breast carcinoma in mid-October 2023.

Rapid intervention and well-supported treatment allowed him to remain in contact with his teams despite his sick leave. “My state of health allowed it” and this played a “very positive” role in the prospect of a return, specifies Nurria Gorrite.

Sylvie Bonvin-Sansonnens “very moved”

The Vaudois politician was not the only one to have to face health concerns.

For Friborg State Councilor Sylvie Bonvin-Sansonnens, it took the form of a cancerous tumor in the spine. Last November, she had to stop for treatment. This Thursday morning also marks his return to business.

The Minister of Training and Cultural Affairs says she is “very moved” by the many expressions of sympathy shown to her. “I still have a little trouble walking long distances, but I am strong in the head,” she said in an interview.

Théo Huguenin-Elie all smiles, but “cautious”

In La Chaux-de-Fonds, municipal councilor Théo Huguenin-Elie tastes the town’s wine, which he presents at a press conference. The familiar exercise nevertheless feels like victory following three months of absence.

Operated on for pancreatic cancer, the elected socialist returns to work with a reduced schedule.

Because of fatigue, “I can’t yet exceed 40 or 42 hours per week,” says Théo Huguenin-Elie. After this ordeal, the politician knows he has come a long way. He says he wants to remain “cautious” to ensure his functions over the long term.
