“Swiss Players Shine at Roland-Garros: Simona Waltert and Dominic Stricker Make Main Draw”

The Swiss contingent at Roland-Garros continues to grow. Simona Waltert (WTA 127) made it to the main draw of a Grand Slam tournament for the first time in her career.

The 22-year-old Grisonne dominated 6-2 4-6 6-4 the French Elsa Jacquemot (WTA 175) in the 3rd qualifying round. On Thursday, another Swiss, Ylena In-Albon (WTA 148) joined the main draw via qualifying. There will therefore be 4 Swiss women in the running from Sunday at the Porte d’Auteuil.

Belinda Bencic will face Russian qualifier Elina Avanesyan (134) in the 1st round, while Jil Teichmann will have to overcome Sara Errani (70), runner-up in 2012. Simona Waltert will face American Elizabeth Mandlik (118) and Ylena In-Albon in will do battle with another American, Claire Liu (100).

Dominic Stricker drafted

Dominic Stricker (ATP 116) finally appears in the main draw at Roland-Garros. Beaten in the 3rd qualifying round, the Bernese was drafted as a lucky loser and will play his 1st Grand Slam tournament. The Swiss No. 3 will face the American Tommy Paul (ATP 17) in the first round.
