The referendum once morest the reform of the 2nd pillar, launched at the end of March, was full of votes. The left and the unions handed over 141,726 signatures to the Federal Chancellery on Tuesday. The people will vote in March 2024.
The unions and the left had until July 6 to collect the necessary 50,000 signatures. The many signatures show that people are fed up with the dismantling of pensions, said Pierre-Yves Maillard, president of the Swiss Trade Union Union and PS national adviser, during the presentation.
‘Parliament has worked poorly’, continued the Vaudois. The planned reform is a simple exercise in savings and will lead to lower pensions.
Fall in pensions
Adopted by Parliament during the spring session, the reform of occupational pensions (LPP21) leads to reductions in pensions of up to 3240 francs per year, according to the referendaries.
The reform provides for a lowering of the conversion rate, from 6.8% to 6%, which has become necessary, according to its supporters, due to the increase in life expectancy. The capital built up by an annuitant during his professional activity will therefore result in a smaller annuity.
Half of the insured persons will benefit from pension compensation, during a transitional period of 15 years. The threshold for access to the second pillar will be lowered, which will allow 100,000 people to be newly or better insured, mainly people working part-time and women.
Women once more penalized
But for the referendaries, the latter will once once more be penalized, following the vote on AVS21 and the raising of the retirement age to 65 years. The majority of them will suffer reductions in pensions. They recall that during the vote campaign, the bourgeois parties had nevertheless promised to tackle the problem of too low pensions, in particular those of women.
Only finance will benefit from the reform, still accuses the referendum committee. The banking and insurance lobby used all its weight in Parliament to undo the ‘good compromise’ initially submitted to the Federal Chambers by the social partners and the Federal Council.
In addition to the unions, the PS and the Greens, the referendum is also supported by the consumer protection magazines ‘Bon à savoir’ and ‘K-Tipp’. Adrian Wüthrich, president of the Labor.Swiss umbrella union, expects a “great victory” in the vote on March 3, 2024, the date on which the people should decide.
