The empty chair of the triumvirate that presides over Swiss monetary policy has finally found a taker. A little more than six months after the announcement of the departure of Andréa Maechler for the Bank for International Settlements, the Federal Council announced on Friday the appointment of Antoine Martin to the general management of the Swiss National Bank (SNB).

To take up his duties at the beginning of January, this 54-year-old economist from Vaud will cross the Atlantic with his family since he has worked for around twenty years at the New York Federal Reserve. A return to the Old Continent which should not be too destabilizing for someone who saw the country during his childhood, notably following his father’s doctor – Jean Martin, a former Vaud cantonal doctor – to Peru and India. Returning to Switzerland at the age of 7, he then attended school in Echandens, in the Morges district.
