Two Swiss museums were rewarded on Saturday. The Swiss Agricultural Museum in Burgrain, Alberswisl (LU), has been awarded the Meyvaert Prize 2021 for sustainability. The Payerne Abbey Museum (VD) received a special recommendation from the jury.

With this special recommendation, awarded on Saturday evening in Barcelona, the jury of the European Museum of the Year Awards (EMYA) rewards “an institution located in one of the major masterpieces of Romanesque architecture”, indicates the museum paysnois in a statement released Saturday evening.

“It is also an institution that offers its visitors a sensory, lively and emotional experience. Through an innovative and sometimes humorous approach, the discovery trail successfully reveals the complex history of this thousand-year-old place”, adds the text .

As a reminder, Payerne Abbey, the largest Romanesque church in Switzerland, reopened its doors in July 2020, following more than ten years of restoration and enhancement work. Its discovery trail offers a new look at the building and its original characters.

Sustainability

For its part, the Swiss Museum of Agriculture seeks to offer “a holistic platform on sustainability”, indicates the EMYA in its brochure presenting the winners. It is intended as the starting point for a collective discussion on climate, resources, changing behaviors and planning for a common future.

A total of 33 European museums were in the running for the museum of the year prize, including seven from Switzerland: the Abbatiale de Payerne, the Swiss Agricultural Museum Burgrain, the Kunsthaus Zürich, the Musée Atelier Audemars Piguet in Le Brassus (VD), the Cantonal Museum of Fine Arts in Lausanne, the Museo di Val Verzasca in Sonogno (TI), as well as the exhibition area of the Stiftsbezirk in St. Gallen.

The top prize was awarded to Etno, the ethnography museum in Valencia, Spain.
