The Swiss airline is modernizing its long-haul fleet. It announced on Tuesday that it had purchased five Airbus A350-900 aircraft – these come from an order for 25 aircraft placed by the Lufthansa group with Airbus in 2019. The aircraft will be in service from 2025 and will replace the four Airbus A340-300 four-engined aircraft still in service.

The new twin-engines are described as “modern, very economical and efficient in terms of CO₂ emissions”. According to the airline’s press release, “the twin-engine Airbus A350-900 produces approximately 25% less CO₂ emissions than the previous model and less than half the noise emissions.” In addition, it consumes an average of only regarding 2.5 liters of kerosene per passenger per 100 km. With these new models, Swiss intends to “further significantly improve its carbon footprint”.

“The choice of the Airbus A350-900 clearly affirms our commitment to more sustainable air operations. It will make a vital contribution to achieving our ambitious climate goals. The entry into service of this latest generation aircraft offering additional comfort to our customers will also allow us to reaffirm our positioning as a premium airline,” said Dieter Vranckx, CEO of Swiss.
