(Keystone-ATS) One of the largest jackpots in the history of the lottery will be at stake on Wednesday and is expected to attract hundreds of thousands of players in French-speaking Switzerland. If just one lucky person manages to guess the right numbers, they will hit a record jackpot of 61 million.

“It is estimated that the number of players has increased by 30% in French-speaking Switzerland since the beginning of February due to this exceptional jackpot,” Loterie Romande communications director Danielle Perrette told Keystone-ATS. Thus, the entity estimates that 300,000 people tried their luck last Saturday, including 100,000 casual players.

The largest sum pocketed by a single person to date in the history of Swiss Loto was 48.6 million francs. The jackpot ended up falling on August 23, 2014 following 42 draws.

The largest jackpot ever accumulated at Swiss Loto amounts to 70 million francs. However, it was distributed between the three players who won it in December 2016, each receiving 23.4 million.

“Stay true to your values”

This time, the jackpot lasted 52 draws, bringing the jackpot into play with each attempt. The last time a lucky person ticked all six correct numbers and the lucky number was in August last year.

Any advice for the person who hits the jackpot? “Quickly contact Loterie romande, take the time to think and surround yourself with professionals, while remaining faithful to its values,” recommends Ms. Perrette.

Swiss Loto is the game that makes the most millionaires in Switzerland, Loterie romande recalled Monday in a press release. Since the game’s launch in 1970, some 1,075 players have become millionaires.

…without forgetting taxes

If the jackpot falls on Wednesday, the amount actually received by the winner will be less than 61 million because lottery winnings are subject to several types of taxes. First of all, the withholding tax: the first million is exempt, then 35% of the rest is paid directly to the federal tax administration. Out of 61 million, the lucky one therefore receives 39 million.

The entire amount credited must then be declared as income in the tax return and will be taxed by the Confederation, the canton and the municipality. The amount of taxes varies significantly depending on the place of residence. In addition to this, the money that is still in the account at the end of the year will have to be declared as assets.

In Switzerland, there are also transnational lottery games, such as Euro Millions for example, which has 12 countries participating across Europe. As part of this game, the tidy sum of 70.17 million francs was pocketed last week by a lucky elected official in France.
