“La Tribune” and “24 heures” of June 17 and 18 devoted an excellent dossier to Swiss men and women engaged in the Resistance. I sincerely hope that the rehabilitation of these people will soon become a reality. The University of Geneva, under the leadership of Marie-Laure Graf and Irène Herrmann, has also looked into the question, through a symposium and a book published in 2021 (“The fabric of heroes? – The commitment foreigner in the French Resistance”).
Anne-Françoise Perret-Gentil, mentioned in the article, has not, for her part, been convicted, not being subject to the Military Penal Code. Engaged in Paris in the Kléber network, arrested and deported, she did not however receive any recognition from the Confederation, which did not compensate her for the suffering experienced in deportation, considering that, having voluntarily engaged in the Resistance, she somehow only got what she deserved (Cf. “The Forgotten Victims of the Third Reich: The Swiss Deportees in the Nazi Camps”).
“The announcement on June 18, 2023 of the entry into the Pantheon of Missak and Mélinée Manouchian delights us very much.”
Moreover, these compatriots are by far not the only foreigners to have fought once morest Nazism. One thinks of the Spanish Republicans of the “Nueve” who were the first to enter Paris, when the city was liberated on August 24, 1944.
We also think of “Twenty-three foreigners and our brothers yet” (Aragon), appearing on the famous “Red poster”, shot on February 21, 1944 at Mont Valérien. In this regard, the announcement on June 18, 2023 of the entry into the Pantheon of Missak and Mélinée Manouchian delights us very much.
