The Swiss take a rather pessimistic look at their finances in 2024, according to a Comparis survey. Nearly a third expect financial losses, but the majority do not want to give up either the car or travel.

Nearly one in three people surveyed expect to have less money in their wallet and in their bank account in 2024, Comparis said on Thursday. This is a “record level” – in previous years the share of pessimists fluctuated between 13 and 18%.

It is above all the increase in health insurance premiums as well as the rise in rents and mortgage rates that make the population fear financial deterioration.

Give up gadgets

When they have to tighten their belts, respondents are more likely to save money on new electronics and gadgets. On the other hand, according to Comparis, the majority care regarding their vacations and their car. Only 36% would be willing to give up vacations and travel, compared to 41% the previous year.

The car also remains very popular: 28% of those surveyed say they might give up their own vehicle, a lower score than in the last three years.

The representative survey was carried out in November by the market research institute Innofact, at the request of Comparis. She interviewed 1,021 people in all regions of Switzerland.
