A Swiss entrepreneur wanted to send parcels from Germany to a German recipient.
-
But he hadn’t declared the free samples through customs and then he came under scrutiny.
-
Now he is over 400 euros lighter and on top of that he still has a criminal case on his hands.
German customs works thoroughly. And as the regular reports from the authorities show, the officials at the Lörrach main customs office really don’t miss anything. On January 8th, a patrol in the urban area of Weil am Rhein spotted a Swiss vehicle in front of a parcel shop. A man unloaded three large packages from it. Reason enough for an inspection.
The man stated that he had brought the packages with him from Switzerland and now wanted to send them privately from the parcel shop to a recipient in Germany. This is much cheaper than doing this from Switzerland. However, the presentation of the packages indicated that the sender was a company. When confronted with this, the man admitted that it contained products from his Swiss company that he wanted to send as free sample shipments to a company in the Emmendingen district.
With the free samples in his luggage, the entrepreneur then had to accompany the customs officers to the customs office, where the packages were opened. It revealed more than 80 packs of chocolate chips and over 740 protein bars. A clear case of commercial goods clearance without mandatory customs declaration or, to put it more simply: smuggling.
And on top of that, a criminal case
Online investigations by the officials – they consulted the prices in the company’s web shop – showed that more than 400 euros in import duties would be due. The entrepreneur had to deposit the amount as security for punishment. In addition, proceedings were initiated for attempted tax evasion. The man might then leave the office with his packages and – if he still wanted – take them to the post office.
