“Swiss Electricity Consumption and Production in 2022: Analysis and Insights from SFOE”

2023-04-20 09:25:40

In 2022, the economic situation (+2.1%) and demographic change (+0.8%) are among the factors that have increased consumption, the Federal Office of Energy (SFOE) said on Thursday. But the rather mild temperatures, the improvement in energy efficiency and supply concerns linked to the war in Ukraine have contributed to bringing it down.

National consumption reached 61.3 billion kWh, from which must be deducted the losses linked to transport and distribution (4.3 billion kWh). The decline (-7.2%) is felt especially in the fourth quarter, which was particularly mild. The more detailed analyzes available in October 2023 will provide more information on the factors that have influenced electricity consumption, adds the SFOE.

Production down too

National electricity production fell by 1.1% in 2022, standing at 63.5 billion kWh. After deducting 5.6 billion kWh for the consumption of storage pumps, production totals 57.9 billion kWh. Compared to 2021, production was only higher in the last quarter.

Hydroelectric installations (run-of-river and storage power stations) produced 15.2% less electricity than the previous year. It should be noted that since July 2022, the new Nant de Drance pumped storage power plant has been included in the statistics.

The four Swiss nuclear power plants produced 24.7% more energy than in 2021, i.e. 23.1 billion kWh. An increase that the SFOE explains by a slight increase in power on the one hand and by reduced own consumption in the renovated Leibstadt power station on the other. In 2022, the availability of the Swiss nuclear fleet increased to 89.5% (71.9% in 2021).

Hydroelectric power stations provided 52.8% of total electricity production and nuclear power stations 36.4%. The remaining 10.8% comes from conventional thermal power plants and renewable installations.

Prices more than doubled

In 2022, Switzerland imported 33.1 billion kWh and exported 29.7 billion kWh. The import balance therefore amounted to 3.4 billion kWh, compared to 2.4 billion in 2021.

In financial terms, the SFOE recalls that prices have more than doubled compared to the previous year. In the end, Switzerland recorded a slight positive foreign trade balance of 71 million francs, following a negative balance of 258 million the previous year, according to figures from the Federal Office of Customs and Border Security (OFDF). ).
