Swiss Climate Alliance Criticizes SNB Investment Policy: Demanding Sustainability in Investments

The Swiss Climate Alliance made its voice heard through several shareholders at the SNB’s general meeting on Friday morning in Bern. She criticizes the investment policy of the Swiss National Bank, which is considered to be unfriendly to the environment.

The climate requirements are accelerating, and Switzerland’s most important economic player is not being spared. The climate alliance did not let up the pressure on Friday in Bern, with several resolutions and interventions to change the agenda and demand more sustainability in investments.

Demands that have the gift of irritating the management of the Swiss central bank. The general meeting thus began with a long plea from the president of the banking council, Barbara Janom Steiner, who led the debates, to condemn these demands, which she herself described as “dangerous attacks for our country”.

She stood up once morest the “instrumentalization” of the notion of public interest, extended to climate protection by environmental protesters.

A simple mandate: price stability

“Let’s not be fooled by these conversations, no matter how loud they may be!” she asserted. “This is not the institution’s role. Our mandate is to ensure price stability, which it has done successfully.”

This preamble did not prevent a first protesting shareholder from taking the floor from item four on the agenda, which nevertheless concerned the financial report. The President let him speak until the end, but told him that the answer to his question would not come until point 8, “general discussion”.

But the Salves continued, at every point on the agenda, to always demand more commitments for the climate.

These interventions currently have no impact on the bank’s investment policy. As for the task of ensuring price stability, the SNB has quite successfully carried it out, if we compare the inflation rates in Switzerland compared to neighboring countries.
