Moritz Estermann emigrated to Berlin 20 years ago.
In the meantime, he can look back on many experiences and drastic professional years.
Berlin society meets at the Grill Royal, including international stars such as Tom Hanks and Leonardo Di Caprio.
With the Château Royal he opened a boutique hotel in Berlin.
When the then 19-year-old Moritz Estermann told his parents that he was going to Deutschland wanted to go, he received the answer that they would continue to pay his health insurance contributions, but that he had to earn the rest of his life himself. This was for the young man from the village Schetz (LU) the decisive kick that he needed for the step from the sheltered family home in the country to self-employment.
Estermann arrived on a summer’s day in 2003 with the Interrail at Ostbahnhof in Berlin. He worked at gyms and fashion stores, and roamed nightlife venues on weekends. This was followed by an internship at an art fashion magazine and he learned the art dealer Javier Peres know. Vernissages there were events where drugs were involved in addition to drinks. The Lucerne native was fascinated by this world and his job was to organize all the madness. But wild life was also approaching a tipping point and he explained it to him “Store” (Paid article) like this: “I was the Swiss Mountain Boy.” By this Estermann means that he remained a reasonable man despite his crazy life.
Leonardo DiCaprio or Tom Hanks as guests
Then in 2008 the financial crisis followed and the art market went down the drain. Estermann also saw how an artist he knew died from drugs, how other people’s art was no longer in demand, and how Peres had to go into rehab. This was the point where the Lucerne native thought it was time to do something positive for his life. A good year and a few jobs later, he discovered a quality that he had never known before: he turned out to have a talent for communication. Only a short time later, the celebrity restaurant Grill Royal was one of his customers. The aim of the initiators: they wanted to get out of the “culinary wasteland” of Berlin and Estermann was enthusiastic regarding the dedication of the makers.
When he was invited to work for the Grill Royal, he learned service, event organization and bookkeeping from scratch. Another restaurant and a bar belonged to the Grill. In the Grill Royal you can find Berlin society right up to international stars such as Tom Hanks or Leonardo DiCaprio. In the meantime, a hotel has also been opened with the Château Royal. In 2021 he left the grill and has dedicated himself to the hotel ever since. When asked regarding his work by the “Magazine”, Estermann replies: “I’m the ghost”, because he can often turn up unexpectedly. That’s why he made it to the top of Berlin’s gastronomy scene without ever knowingly wanting to.
As he said when asked by 20 minutes, he is currently turning more towards Switzerland, although he is not yet sure regarding the exact future. Estermann continues: «Lucerne was and is always an integral part of my life. Yesterday I went to a great concert at the Lucerne Festival in the KKL and before that I ate Fischknusperli.»
