Synchronized swimmer Vasiliki Alexandri missed out on a medal in the technical freestyle final at the World Championships in Doha on Saturday. The two-time vice world champion from Fukuoka 2023, who had impressed in second place in the preliminary competition, made a mistake in the final and only finished sixth with 234.4984 points. Alexandri had risked too much.
The best-placed Greek Evangelia Platanioti (272.9633) took the world title ahead of Jacqueline Simoneau from Canada (269.2767) and the Chinese Huiyan Xu (262.3700).
Alexandri’s disappointment was great. “Of course it hurts a lot because it felt really good. I added a few elements compared to the previous fight. For the last two I forgot to add an element, a screw. That’s a penalty and you lose regarding 30 points,” said the 26-year-old.

“It was completely my mistake. I took the risk and I have to move forward in my thoughts now, because it will continue tomorrow. It’s a new competition, everything starts all over once more. The goal is once more to get to the final and then we’ll see what happens next.”
On Sunday (7.30 a.m.) Vasiliki Alexandri will be in action in the preliminary fight for the free program. Her twin sisters Anna-Maria and Eirini-Marina had to cancel the duet competitions at the World Cup on Wednesday because of Anna-Maria’s shoulder injury.
By the way, swimming in a duet instead of her injured sister Anna-Maria, even though she had completed the free program, was not an issue for Vasiliki. In the solo freestyle, the medal decision will be made on Tuesday. Vasiliki Alexandri’s free choreography is new, the difficulty level of which is the fifth highest in the field.
Lotfi fails from the 1m board
Dariush Lotfi was unable to intervene in the medal fight at all in jumping from the 1m board. The Styrian missed the final of the top twelve as 22nd in the preliminary competition. On Thursday and Friday, Lotfi and Anton Knoll will be challenged in the 10m synchronized jumping or solo ten.
