Swimmers applaud approval of funds for design of heated pool in Chillán – La Discusión 2024-07-20 21:14:36

“We are very happy because we are one step closer to having our own pool. This is a social benefit for children, young people and adults who swim and seniors who do water aerobics.”

These were the thoughts of the once prominent local swimmer and current coach of the Atenas Chillán Aquatic Activities Club, Ignacio Varas, following the municipal council of Chillán approved the proposal of Mayor Camilo Benavente to begin the design phase of the future heated pool of the Quilamapu Sports Park, a dream that had been postponed for more than 50 years.

This includes the delivery of the design to “Bedin Mendoza Arquitectos Asociados Limitado and Manuel Rodríguez Maldini”, for an amount of $180,000,000 and a term of execution of 190 days.

Happy swimming family

The heated pool would have a construction area of 2,665 m², with 2,000 m² in exterior works and green areas, which includes a semi-Olympic pool of 25 x 21 meters, a depth of 1.45 to 1.65 meters, 8 lanes. The capacity would be approximately 6,840 people per week.

It includes complementary infrastructure such as an administrative area, toilets, bleachers, a machine room, solar panels, parking lots and green areas.

“These are resources from the Ministry of Sports as a result of a strategic decision, since it will finance the design. Chillán, as a regional capital, needs this pool with a management plan so that it can be used by more than 8,000 people per month. It is a public policy for everyone. Senior citizens, children with disabilities and athletes,” said the mayor of Chillán, Camilo Benavente.

“This is the most wonderful thing that can exist for swimming clubs that love water and we are truly happy because this administration has listened to us following years of borrowing pools,” confessed Iris Salazar, president of the Chillán Hydrogymnastics and Swimming Club.

“I am happy and grateful to God because for years we have yearned for this project. I have been here for 35 years and I have dreamed of this, especially for the elderly and people with disabilities who need it to improve their quality of life and all the clubs that need training,” stressed María Cristina Quezada, president of the Aquamaster Club of Chillán.

The director of common planningCarlos Araya stressed that the firm that will carry out the final design must favour solutions that use renewable energy or low maintenance costs. The aim is for the design to promote integration with the rest of the sports complex; to strengthen its habitability and its character as a public space, by providing urban furniture, exercise machines, children’s games (related to sports) and vegetation in order to strengthen spaces for circulation and hosting of activities in the area, and to improve the levels of cleanliness and health with the use of easy-to-clean pavements; in addition to providing security, lighting and other elements.

The final budget for the construction of the sports complex will be determined based on the work carried out by the company approved by the council, but it is estimated that it “might range from 6 billion to 10 billion.”

In the country, heated pools have recently been built with variable budgets, such as in Rancagua 2021; $6,497,829,026; La Reina 2022: $10,527,381,000 and La Serena 2022: $9,910,463,537.

To execute the municipal project, he said, “we have an estimated budget for the execution of the Quilamapu heated pool of $8,047,434,523.”
