Venezuelan Alfonso Mestre made his debut at the Paris 2024 Olympic Games in the 400-meter freestyle event.

The swimmer, holder of the national record for the distance (3:46.14, Fukuoka World Championships, Japan 2023), finished with 3:48.20 in the third heat of the event, swimming in lane 1 of the Paris La Defense Arena Complex.

“I am not very happy with the result. I did everything in my power to give my best effort. After the results are positive, God willing. In this one, then, it is time to focus, readjust for Monday, which is the 800 (meter freestyle), my main event in these games. All that remains is to move forward,” said Mestre to Aloy Marín, a member of the press department of the Venezuelan Olympic Committee (COV) during his visit to the mixed zone of the Parisian aquatic sports center.

Location

Mestre finished third in the first 50 meters (26.11 seconds) and then remained between fourth and fifth place, until the 300 meters where he did his worst partial with 29.65: “I couldn’t tell you, I did the best I could to give it my all. I felt very good. I felt very good in the water. I felt like I was going to do a faster time, but nothing. Onward.”

Mestre was the best Latin American in the race, after the Brazilian Guilherme Costa (second in the classification with 3:44.23): “Tomorrow (Sunday) when I have free time, I have to work. Think, do my recovery. Find an exact pace that I will be comfortable with in the 800m race. A pace that will ensure me an Olympic final time,” he considered.

The 800-meter race will be held on July 29 and Mestre will be in lane 6 of the second of five heats. The eight best times qualify for the final.
