A recent study found that drinking just one can of sweetened soft drink per day may increase the risk of liver cancer by 85 percent.

Researchers from Harvard Medical School in Boston followed a group of women over the age of fifty for more than 20 years, and the study found that women who drink only one can of sweetened soft drink per day are more likely to develop liver cancer.

Study results in numbers

Women who drank one or more sugar-sweetened soft drinks a day had an 85 percent increased risk of developing liver cancer. Women who drank one or more sugar-sweetened soft drinks per day were 68 percent more likely to die of liver disease than those who drank the same beverage three or fewer times per month. The study found liver cancer rates of 18 per 100,000 women who drank one or more sugary drinks per day.

The researchers said that although their study was unable to determine how consumption of sugar-sweetened beverages is associated with liver disease, some of the “potential pathways” to that relationship include obesity, massive increases in blood sugar and the buildup of fat around the liver.
