Reno‘s Candy Kingdom: The Sweet Success Story of Kimmie Candy
For those with a sweet tooth, Reno holds a secret treasure – the delicious world of Kimmie Candy. Since its humble beginnings in 2000, Kimmie Candy has grown from garage-packaged treats to a national brand found in stores chained and independent alike.
What makes Kimmie Candy stand out in a crowded confectionery world?
First, there’s Joe Dutra, a third-generation farmer who never planned on becoming a candy king. His story is one of family legacy, community focus, and adapting to changing markets:
“We moved production to Reno in 2008,” recounts Dutra. “I wanted to create more Nevada jobs and saw a real opportunity to build something special here.”
That “something special” began as a serendipitous encounter with 40,000 pounds of stranded candy-coated sunflower kernels.
“A broker contacted me, and this funny-sounding product seemed like a risk worth taking,” Dutra laughs. “My kids and their friends helped me get it out into local markets, and things really took off.” ”
Fast forward to today: Kimmie Candy boasts a diverse product line – from their core ChocoRocks, awarded “Product of the Year” by the industry, to a growing selection that caters to health-conscious consumers.
“Being ‘Made in America’ has meant so much,” explains Dutra, who proudly showcases Kimmie Candy’s commitment to ethical sourcing and employing over 47 Nevadans. “In 2017, we even represented Nevada at the first ever ‘Made in America Day’ at the White House! ”
There are more attributes that make Kimmie stand apart. Known for its ‘Sunbursts’ (Dutra’s personal favorite, continually refined), the company embraces its community strive for a commitment to creating healthier, allergy-friendly options.
“I thought being peanut-free would allow us to reach more kids without worrying about allergies,” Dutra explains. “My brother has celiac disease, so gluten-free was a priority, too.
Kimmie Candy’s commitment to quality has led them to become a trusted name. Their “made in America’ designation resonates strongly with consumers who are increasingly seeking products that align with their values.
Looking ahead, Dutra’s mainly focused on expanding their reach within the United States and developing innovative new flavors and cutting-edge Modestly, his biggest hope?
“We want to create a company that aligns with the future of food in the United States. We’re working on tastier, healthier choices like walnut-covered in strawberry yogurt, and even sweeter innovations like whey-based candies, focusing on snacks that are also safe for those with dietary restrictions and school-friendly, too. We really want to become a household name known for its taste and its commitment to making everyone’s life a little sweeter.
”
Because Dutra’s “Made in Nevada”?
Dutra simply adds with a wink:
“I think it’s because we’re one of the sweetest companies in Nevada — pun intended! We love our community. The last few years have been incredible, from award wins to the opening of the factory here.
It’s all about turning that first taste test into a lifelong love for our candies, we’ve earned many accolades in our community. ”
It’s a recipe that’s working, one delicious batch at a time.
