Eager to present a project likely to enable Sweden to finally host an edition of the Olympic and Paralympic Winter Games following many unsuccessful attempts, the bidders are continuing to inspect potential sites and exchange discussions with local authorities and regionally across the country.

While the coming weeks promise to be decisive for all the declared or unofficial candidates for the organization of the 2030 Winter Games – or even the 2034 edition – the Swedish Olympic Committee (SOK), the Paralympic Committee (SPK) and the National Sports Confederation (RF) continue to work together to design a competitive project and submit it for examination by the International Olympic Committee (IOC).
Also, in order to complete the system which has been taking shape for several months now, namely the expected mobilization of sports sites around four cities and their outskirts, from the capital Stockholm to Falun via Östersund and Åre, the three authorities are increasing the number of meetings on the ground and interviews with public authorities, but also actors from the private sector who, if necessary, will be called upon to support the Swedish Olympic and Paralympic ambition.
In this sense, a delegation visited earlier this month the County of Dalarna – or Dalarna in its Swedish name – in the center of the country.
This visit, orchestrated on Monday September 4, 2023, therefore made it possible to measure the quality of the infrastructure, particularly proposed on the Falun side, as well as the enthusiasm of the local authorities to support the development of the application.
As highlighted by Governor Helena Höij, who was able to present the way in which the County might get involved in the project:
It was an enriching followingnoon where we had the opportunity to take part in each other’s visions, plans and thoughts regarding Sweden’s hosting of the Games in 2030.
What Dalarna can offer rhymes very well with the plan that SOK wishes to be able to carry out and present to the IOC.
After the technical presentation, with the assistance of municipal representatives from Falun, Malung-Sälen and Älvdalen, as well as business leaders and tourism stakeholders, the governor invited all the participants to a dinner to end an intense day of work.
If Falun already had its place assured in the mapping of sites under consideration for the 2030 Olympic Games in Sweden, other existing installations in Dalarna might be integrated into the forecast system.
As Hans von Uthmann, President of SOK, stated at the end of the visit:
Falun and Dalarna have demonstrated time and once more that the city and region can host world-class sporting events.
We received very valuable information which we will now use in the rest of our work.

As with the other contenders for the Games, Sweden will now prepare for the next events at the end of 2023, in particular those in October.
The IOC Executive Board will meet on October 12 and 13, shortly before the IOC Session expected in Bombay (India) from October 15 to 17. These two highlights will partly focus on the forces present for the 2030-2034 Games – Salt Lake City (Utah, United States), Sweden, Switzerland, the French Alps, and Sapporo (Japan) as known candidates – with possibly the question of a double attribution of these two editions.
The Future Host Commission will in turn enter the dance in November 2023, with the examination of the various projects and the recommendation of one or more applications to the Executive Commission which will meet once more at the beginning of December.
Entry into the targeted dialogue phase might then be decided on December 1.
From this date, discussions should intensify between the parties, the aim being to achieve the designation of the Future Host of the Games during the year 2024.
