Sweden’s Plan for Expanding Nuclear Energy: Government Aims to Install 10 New Reactors

Sweden currently has three nuclear power plants and six reactors. However, if the news is true, the government wants to install 10 more reactors. And in order to do this, they will even change the laws that might prevent this. Because the Swedish government, like many other countries in the world, believes that nuclear energy is climate-friendly and environmentally friendly energy. According to Environment Minister Romina Pourmokhtari, in order for the country to be able to keep up with the incredible rate of growth in energy demand, Sweden would need many more nuclear power plants, at least doubling the current production. And this is only possible with nuclear energy. At one time, however, there was even talk that Sweden would completely stop using nuclear energy, but this trend seems to be changing. There are currently three nuclear reactors operating in Forsmark, two in Oskarshamn and one in Ringhals. Together, they account for 30% of Sweden’s energy production. Sweden is currently governed by a conservative government and a right-wing populist party is the most popular. The latter already stated before the elections that nuclear energy needs to be expanded and not stopped. Currently, according to the law, a maximum of 10 reactors can operate in Sweden and only in the three power plants mentioned above. At the beginning of this year, Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson spoke regarding the need to build more reactors in new areas, and according to Minister Pourmokhtari, detailed plans for this will be announced in the fall. Nuclear energy is quite divisive around the world, for example due to the serious risks inherent in it and the unresolved issue of nuclear waste disposal. However, the trend shows that many countries that want to reduce their energy dependence or increase their energy production can only do so with nuclear energy.
