Sweden, the prime minister says yes to nuclear weapons “in times of war” –

Swedish Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson said he was in favor of a possible deployment of nuclear weapons in the country in times of war, at a time when several critical voices were raised calling for such weapons to be completely banned on the territory of the new member of the Born. The Swedish parliament will vote in June on the bilateral defense cooperation agreement (DCA) concluded with the United States which would, if approved, allow the Americans to access Swedish military bases and store equipment and weapons there. It should be remembered that, in the wake of the events linked to the war in Ukraine, Sweden put an end to 200 years of military non-alignment by joining the Atlantic Alliance in March. Several NGOs, including the Swedish Society for Peace and Arbitration, have asked the Stockholm government to include in the agreement with the US a ban on the deployment of nuclear weapons on Swedish soil.

The executive has repeatedly stated that such a statement would not be necessary, highlighting “a broad consensus on nuclear weapons” in Sweden combined with a parliamentary decision banning the deployment of nuclear weapons in peacetime. But the Swedish Prime Minister stressed that in the event of war the situation should be assessed differently. “In wartime the issue would be completely different, it depends completely on what happens,” he said in an interview with state radio.
