Sweden, shots fired near an Israeli defense technology company –

Shots were fired this morning in <a href="https://www.archyde.com/sweden-european-champion-in-deadly-shootings/" title="Sweden, European champion in deadly shootings”>Gothenburg, Sweden, near an Israeli defense company, Elbit Systems. The local media reported it, adding that there were no injuries and that a minor was stopped. According to what Aftonbladet reports, shortly after the shooting another alarm was triggered due to an alleged suspicious object. The incident is currently being investigated for attempted murder and serious weapons-related crimes. According to the Göteborgs-Posten, a massive police operation is underway in the area. The same local newspaper mentions a gym located in the same building as the company and says that the police asked them to stay inside.

The media highlight that this is not the first episode of violence involving the Israeli company Elbit Systems: on the night of 3 June an explosive device had been placed at the entrance to the headquarters: the bomb squad had managed to secure the area without that the bomb caused damage and 3 people are in custody in relation to the episode; Expressen reports that one of them is a teenager. Göteborgs-Posten also reports that, even before that, in November 2023 the facade of the company was defaced. Swedish public broadcaster SVT, quoting its security expert journalist John Granlund, points out that Elbit Systems is one of Israel’s largest defense technology companies and that it sells systems, mainly for communications, to various armed forces.

According to the Göteborgs-Posten, in addition to drones the company develops and sells, among other things, communication systems for fighter aircraft, intelligent missiles, unmanned ships, artillery and radar systems, combat control systems, information technology and satellite systems. According to Svt’s Granlund, “there is a campaign directed against the company” which is part of “a kind of expression of dissatisfaction directed against Israel’s war” but “it is not known whether today’s event is the result of a situation of this type or whether there could be real incitement by Iran against Israeli companies behind it.”
